Don John: Local Author 

Dont John is the author of Southampton: Black Stories; it showcases 20 stories highlighting the presence of Black individuals in Southampton since the 16th century. It features figures like Jacques Francis, the diver, and Alexander Patterson, who ran a pub at the century’s turn, alongside Bob Marley, who made appearances in Swaythling in 1973 and Hedge End in 1971. This book reveals overlooked aspects of Black history in the city, emphasising the importance of personal narratives in illustrating broader issues. 

James Baldwin is celebrated for his incisive essays and novels that explore race, identity, and belonging, illuminating the struggles and triumphs of Black individuals in America. His eloquent prose resonates deeply, urging readers to confront societal injustices.
