In store now! Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann

As part of our ‘Mothers of the Revolution’ celebration, this week we’re highlighting some of the most important and revolutionary works of literature by women! First up, Lucy Ellmann’s Ducks, Newburyport.

Winner of the Goldsmiths prize, and shortlisted for the Booker, Ducks, Newburyport sees our nameless narrator latticing one cherry pie after another, while her children freewheel around her, and the world outside her window falls into disorder. It is her internal mind, however, that makes Ellmann’s novel so revolutionary. As readers, we are privy to every thought that enters her mind: her hopes, her dreams, her failures. Whilst the world around her seems to succumb to madness, Ellmann’s narrator remains a model of empathy, warmth, compassion, and, most importantly, love.

This is a novel only Lucy Ellmann could have written. It’s a rare pleasure to read a new work and know that it is destined to be a classic, but Ducks, Newburyport is exactly that. A big, bold, brash work of genius.

Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann

Paperback £13.99

Latticing one cherry pie after another, an Ohio housewife tries to bridge the gaps between reality and the torrent of meaningless info that is the United States of America. She worries about her children, her dead parents, African elephants, the bedroom rituals of 'happy couples', Weapons of Mass Destruction, and how to hatch an abandoned wood pigeon egg. Is there some trick to surviving survivalists? School shootings? Medical debts? Franks 'n' beans? A scorching indictment of America's barbarity, past and present, and a lament for the way we are sleepwalking into environmental disaster, Ducks, Newburyport is a heresy, a wonder - and a revolution in the novel.

We are open:

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
