In store now! The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy

The masterful return of Cormac McCarthy (The Road, Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men) after a 16-year hiatus finds the now 89 year old author in spectacular form. Mixing theoretical physics and mathematics with a pot-boiler plot about a crashed plane and a conspiracy connected to a supposedly missing passenger, these disparate elements coalesce into a potent investigation into the deepest questions of humanity, the nature of god’s existence, and our latent ability to destroy, erase, and dominate.

By turns funny, heartbreaking, and terrifying, The Passenger is the return of an American master. Containing his most vividly drawn cast of characters this side of Suttree, McCarthy’s 11th novel is a wonder to behold.

The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy

Paperback £14.99

1980, PASS CHRISTIAN, MISSISSIPPI: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wetsuit and plunges from the boat deck into darkness. His divelight illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the crash site are the pilot’s flightbag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit – by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Traversing the American South, from the garrulous bar rooms of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast, The Passenger is a breathtaking novel of morality and science, the legacy of sin, and the madness that is human consciousness.

10am - 5.30 pm

We are back open six days a week, with the whole store open for browsing. We will still of course be taking customer orders and you will still be able to buy food and cleaning products online through our online store.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
