CB Butler is a renowned local historian who has been awarded for her services to heritage. Join us via ZOOM and hear about her latest novel that draws on Southampton’s rich history.

Elizabeth I’s privateers are called into service to save England from its greatest peril. For Richard Mudford a poor boy from the Shambles, it’s an opportunity to get rich, even if he has to gamble his soul, his family and his life.

It tells the story of major events from the Armada, to voyages of adventure to the Americas, of rebellion and treachery and the birth of the theatre, but from the personal perspective of an ordinary man caught up in extra-ordinary events. It is also a family saga of marriages for money, for necessity and for love, of the everyday battle to feed your children, to protect them from illness, and create a future for them.

An epic tale set in Southampton during the reign of Elizabeth I and based on historic documents held in the local archives. Many of the sites mentioned in the novel still exist and can still be visited - this story is also the story of our city!
