Migrant Southampton: Past & Present Walking Tour!

Migrant Southampton: Past & Present Walking Tour!

Join Tony Kushner and Parkes Institute on this walking tour linked to the book and walking tour guide: Southampton’s Migrant Past and Present. (available from October Books!)

The walk will cover many different migrant histories from the medieval through to post-Second World War. Well known buildings will be reinterpreted through the lens of migration and many hidden sites will be uncovered. Taken together they will show that Southampton is a city built on migration and that its prosperity and culture have depended and been shaped by newcomers and their descendants.

Tony Kushner teaches and researches in the Parkes Institute and the History Department of the University of Southampton. He has written widely on migration, racism, heritage and belonging.

It begins at 2pm outside the Duke of Wellington Pub, 36 Bugle Street, Southampton SO14 2AH.

There will be a reception at God’s House Tower.

The walking tour is accessible though there are uneven pavements in part of the one mile route.
