Remembering Phil Collins - 31st July 1944 to 16th May 2024

We would like to invite anyone who knew Phil Collins, an October Books cooperative founder, supporter and friend, to a gathering at the shop to remember and celebrate his life. We will come together on Friday 12th July between 6 and 8pm in the October Books community space to share stories and photos of Phil and hopefully hear some of his favourite jazz music. If you have a story you would like to share or a picture of Phil you would like to bring along please drop Clare a line at clare@octoberbooks.org, please include Phil Collins as the subject line.

Ian Lamming, one of the other founder members of our extraordinary organisation had this to say about Phil.

‘Phil was a founder and important member of the collective from about 1980, when the shop became a cooperative. That meant that unpaid he freely gave his time, thought and skills to help October Books grow and thrive.

His skills in working with people and thinking outside of the box were crucial in helping October Books through many of the bumps in the road that are inevitable in a small business in a tight environment.

Phil was committed to the peace movement, and cooperation which helped the shop navigate those political differences that have been disastrous for some of the cooperatively run bookshops up and down the country.

A crucial cog that has meant October Books has lasted so long, and a wise head who will be much missed’

See you between 6 and 8pm on Friday 12th July, just drop in when you are free. There will be nibbles and drinks provided.
