author talk: Telling Other hiStories (early black history in Southampton c1500-1900) by Cheryl Butler

This talk tells the stories and experiences of black people in Southampton from the late middle ages up until WW1, ranging from Tudor carpenters to Great War Flying Aces, Servants to Regency Acting Stars, from slaves to kings & princes. Showing how black people have contributed to the history and development of Southampton. The book was produced on behalf of the United Voices of Africa Association led by Dr Abdoulie Sanneh, it includes contemporary poetry about young people’s experiences growing up in Southampton, a migration timeline, and a hidden history trail so that readers can visit locations linked to some of the stories in the book.

Dr Cheryl Butler is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, an Honorary Fellow of the Uni of Winchester and a member of the editorial board for the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers. She has published a number of books which have all drawn upon the archives from the Southampton Records office and Hampshire Archives. Winner of the British Association of Local History personal achievement award in 2014 and the City of Southampton award in 2018 for services to heritage. She has spoken at numerous national and international conferences raising the profile of Southampton and its rich history.
